Product Introduction
Potassium fluorosilicate (CAS 16871-90-2) is a colorless, poisonous crystal or powder. It is weak acid and has moisture absorption character. It can be used as antiseptic of wood, assistant reagent in magnesium and aluminium smelted, insecticide in agriculture, intermediate in organic synthesization, chemical reagent in analytical chemistry. Also used in antisepsis material, porcelain enamel, high quality welding rod production and mica synthesization. With a typical purity of ≥98% and supplied in 25 kg lined woven bags, this product is classified under UN 2655 (Class 6.1 toxic substance, PG III) and should be handled with appropriate protective equipment.
Q1: Why is potassium fluorosilicate used in so many industries?
The uses of potassium fluorosilicate are based on its thermal decomposition, fluoride ion activity, and acid production through hydrolysis. In wood preservation and pesticide application, fluoride ions interfere with the metabolism of biological enzymes, inhibiting decay fungi and pests. In the metallurgical industry, high-temperature decomposition reduces the viscosity of molten salts, promoting slag-metal separation and impurity removal in magnesium and aluminum smelting. In the glass and ceramics field, the introduction of potassium and fluorine can adjust the refractive index, or the precipitation of fluoride microcrystals can scatter light to achieve opacity, while simultaneously lowering the melting temperature. In analytical chemistry, potassium fluorosilicate precipitates are quantitatively generated in acidic media, allowing for indirect determination of silicon content through acid-base titration. In corrosion protection and organic intermediates, hydrolysis products passivate metal surfaces, and fluorination agents are used in organic synthesis to introduce fluorine atoms. Furthermore, in welding electrode coatings, it improves arc stability and slag formation, and provides key potassium and silicon elements for mica synthesis.
